WASHINGTON -- President Donald Trump has signed into law legislation funding the government through the end of September, ending the threat of a partial government shutdown and capping off a struggle in Congress that deeply divided Democrats.

Congress averted a government shutdown Friday just hours before the funding deadline, after the Senate approved a House-passed spending bill that exposed deep rifts within the Democratic Party.

House Republicans advanced a stopgap bill Tuesday to fund the government until October, putting moderate Senate Democrats in a tough spot should the measure pass a final vote this afternoon and
