A vote to end debate on the House-passed stopgap spending bill to avoid a government shutdown will take place on Friday afternoon ahead of the late night deadline.

Schumer said he would help advance a GOP spending bill because a shutdown "has consequences for America that are much, much worse."

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer had two choices as the clock ticked down to the government funding deadline: drop his threat to block the Republican bill or force a disruptive March 15 shutdown.

Schumer relented one day after he vowed Senate Democrats would thwart the "partisan" measure, saying the "chaos" of a government shutdown would be a worse option.
