New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Friday that the state is temporarily shutting down all live bird markets in New York City and Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk counties through February 14 after inspectors discovered seven cases of bird flu in poultry.

The order affects roughly 80 markets in New York City and in several nearby counties. New Jersey is also asking its live markets to voluntarily clean, disinfect and temporarily close.

The Bronx and Queens zoos are making changes after several birds there died, suspected of having the bird flu. It comes as the state of New York is taking more action to prevent the spread of the disease,
